A vigilant resident and West Vancouver police foiled what they believe was an attempted residential breakin in Horseshoe Bay.

A member of Block Watch called the police shortly before 11 p.m. Monday to report a man acting suspiciously on the 6600 block of Nelson Avenue. According to Const. Tammy Khorram, a West Vancouver police spokeswoman, officers patrolled the area but couldn't initially locate anyone. But just after 11: 30 p.m., Khorram said, an officer spotted a man matching the resident's description accompanied by a woman on the 6400-block of Marine Drive.

The pair were arrested, held overnight and faced a judge in North Vancouver provincial court Tuesday morning.

Although police recommended charges of break and enter with intent and possession of break-in instruments, the Crown ultimately approved a charge of trespass at night for Ryan Brackenberry, 32, a Surrey resident. His companion, 20-year-old Kara Evans, also from Surrey, was charged with three counts of breaching her probation conditions, one of which is to avoid contact with Brackenberry. Police had recommended possession of break-in instruments, obstruction of a police officer and two weapons charges.
