Why did the chicken cross the road?
“That’s a good question. If only we knew,” says Dragana Hajdukovic, branch manager of the West Vancouver SPCA.
The SPCA now has custody of a particularly friendly chicken, which after apparently flying the coop, was spotted wandering in a yard on the 4000-block of Palmerston Avenue on Tuesday. The homeowners called District of West Vancouver bylaw staff to come pick up the Gallus gallus domesticus who then took her to the SPCA.
“She is very friendly and tame. Staff have been enjoying having her around and cuddling with her,” Hajdukovic said. “She seems very relaxed around people so she’s probably somebody’s pet chicken, but we don’t know.”
The nameless hen laid an egg last night, though Hajdukovic could not say whose property the egg becomes in this situation.
Hajdukovic is hoping the chicken’s coop-keeper will come claim her.
“Basically, if no one comes forward claiming the chicken, then she will be available for adoption,” she said.
If the chicken is a local one, however, the owner is likely engaging fowl play, as the District of West Vancouver does not currently allow backyard chickens.
