Art and fun combine

THERE'S lots for young artists at the North Vancouver Community Arts Council's summer camps.

Kids six to 10 years old can get messy with papier mache, practise drawing and painting animals, tie-dye a hand-made kite, or create costumes. They can also express themselves through dance and drama.

Every class is taught by working artists who are also experienced teachers. Kids are encouraged to have fun and express their creativity through art, said Claire Halpern, coordinator of the summer camps.

Camps are held at Maplewood House, near a playground for blowing off steam and a forest for gathering bits of the natural world to incorporate into artwork. Many of the classes are held outside.

Each week, the Arts Council offers a morning class and an afternoon class. Parents can register their kids in either session, or in both sessions to make a full day. Summer camp classes cost $125 for a week of half-days, or $250 a week for a full day with a supervised lunch break.

The following is a list of some of the camps.

From July 9 to 13, kids can learn about famous artists, colour mixing, creating patterns and drawing techniques in Artist Adventures. In the afternoon, Star Search helps young stars get ready for the stage. Rock out with crazy dance moves, paper costumes, and fun games.

From July 16 to 20, animal lovers can practise drawing a new animal each day, and also work with paint and collage in Art and Animals. In the afternoon, play around with Colours and Patterns, including printmaking, felting, tie dying, stenciling and painting.

From July 23 to 27, have it all with Art Blender in the morning, which introduces kids to a variety of art forms. Drawing, painting and mixed media techniques will be used to create a series of art projects. Kids can create their own paper mache creatures and make a mosaic mural in the afternoon session, Mache and Mosaics.
