The 10-year-old boy who was in critical condition after being hit by a car while riding his bike last week has recovered significantly and is now resting at home, according to the Coquitlam RCMP.

But the investigation continues into how a black Infinity QX80 collided with the young cyclist and police are turning to the public for assistance.

The incident occurred on Thursday, April 30, at around 6 p.m. near the boy’s home at the intersection Parkway Boulevard and Forestridge Place. Investigators are hoping to talk with witnesses and obtain any video footage that may give them a better understanding of what happened.

“If anybody saw anything or has security video that showed the moments before the crash, please call,” said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

The driver has been cooperating with police and there have been no arrests or charges so far, he added. There is also no initial indication that impairment or excessive speed was a factor.

The Criminal Collision Investigation Team has been called in to lead the file and McLaughlin said the processing of vehicle data and drafting a final report is expected to take months.

Mounties are taking the opportunity to remind cyclists to put on their helmets and padding when out on the road.

“We are asking all parents to ensure their children wear proper safety gear and know the rules of the road — even in a quiet neighbourhood,” McLaughlin said. “Drivers should remember that quiet roads probably have children nearby.”
