Pacific Cinémathèque launches new retrospective of filmmaker's oeuvre

10. Jean-Luc Godard’s film One Plus One featuring the Rolling Stones recording “Sympathy for the Devil” at London’s Olympic Studios in June 1968 opens Pacific Cinémathèque’s new retrospective of late period Godard tonight at 7 p.m. The film is Godard at his most didactic with interstices of Black Panther agitprop mixed in randomly with segments from the “Sympathy for the Devil” session. The Stones footage by itself is fascinating and a rare look at the band behind the scenes. They recorded the song the week Robert Kennedy was assassinated requiring a change in Jagger’s lyrics. “I shouted out Who killed Kennedy?” became “I shouted out ‘Who killed the Kennedys?” He’d based the lyrical content on Mikhail Bulgakov’s surreal anti-Stalinist novel The Master and Margarita, written in the 1930s but not published until 1967. Marianne Faithfull gave Jagger a copy of the book as a gift: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hksl3fr3hEA&list=RDHksl3fr3hEA and trailer for Sympathy For The Devil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8K6SUFt9Vs.
