Alexander Payne's Nebraska, starring a veteran cast including Bruce Dern and Stacey Keach, opened the Vancouver International Film Festival last night in a gala presentation at the Centre for Performing Arts.
Dern won Best Actor at Cannes for his portrayal of a cantankerous father who thinks he's struck it rich, and wrangles his son (Will Forte, Saturday Night Live) into taking a road trip to claim the fortune. Payne shot the fim in black and white across four states.
Today the film festival gets into the meat of the schedule with 16 days of programming featuring more than 340 films from 70 countries on nine screens in seven theatres.
Many other award winners are on the VIFF schedule including Abdellatif Kechiche's Palme d'Or winner Blue is the Warmest Color.
