Vancouver musician David Ward made quite an impression on the U.K. press when he toured there before Christmas. They like him, they like him a lot.
Q Magazine showcased his single “Slowly Through The Night” on Dec. 19 in their feature Five Songs to Hear This Week (http://news.qthemusic.com/2013/12/five_songs_to_hear_this_week_-_35.html) and readers who pre-ordered his new album Golden Future Time received a digital copy of the track. The publication compared his voice to Jeff Buckley’s and said Ward’s new tunes “mark the emergence of a very special artist indeed.”
Paul Lester reviewed Ward’s new album in The Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/jan/17/new-band-of-day-david-ward) commenting that “Side one, subtitled Lost, is proggy, atmospheric and rocky, with vocal shades of Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley and allusions to Radiohead and Pink Floyd. Side two, meanwhile, subtitled Golden Future Time, is heavily influenced vocally and musically by Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder — and that’s Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder when they were good, mind you.” High praise indeed.
Francesca D’Arcy-Orga’s rave review of the album at Drowned in Sound (http://drownedinsound.com/releases/18089/reviews/4147444) this week says “People will rave about Ward’s voice, his songwriting, and his ability to span genres, but it’s all of this so neatly combined into one album that’s the impressive feat. Until someone else comes along and proves they can sing like both Jeff Buckley and Michael Jackson, the only thing stopping David Ward from becoming a household name is the injustice of the music industry.”
Ken Pickering, artistic director for the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, will be MCing the Golden Future Time Vancouver release show.
