Lemon candles add some zest

Whether you are hosting a dinner party or just lounging outside on your patio, the soft light and sweet aroma of an outdoor candle can really add a nice touch to the evening.

Simple lemon candles can be made ahead of time and scattered down a dinner table or placed on a patio for a beautiful evening glow. Purchase the wax, oil and lemons a day ahead and let the candles sit overnight. Be sure to get the wax to the 180-degree temperature before pouring into the lemons for best results.

Materials

6 or 7 large, fresh lemons

Melon scooper (or sharp paring knife)

Beeswax (available at Michaels)

Wicks and wick holder

Candy thermometer

½ teaspoon lemon oil

I found the microwave to be the best way to melt the wax. Follow the instructions on the wax package and be sure to read the safety guidelines as well. Use your candy thermometer to ensure the wax is at the ideal temperature of 180 degrees.

Meanwhile, slice your lemons in half. Clean out the insides with a melon scooper or sharp paring knife. Set them aside.

Once you have melted the wax, carefully pour a little into each lemon half. It's a good idea to wear oven mitts to protect your hands from any wax that may splash accidentally. At this point I like to add a little scented lemon oil. Just add a drop or two to each lemon half. Place the candles aside and let them sit overnight in a cool, dry area.

Trim the wick and the candle is ready to use. Scatter fresh yellow flowers around the candles and watch them glow through the evening.
