HOME IDEAS: Change decor with changing season

I love this time of year – the leaves are changing, the temperatures are a little cooler and our city is at its best.

It’s a great time to pull the fading summer plants from our pots and get inspired for fall planting.

It’s also a great time to add a little fall colour to the exterior and interiors of our homes. This year, why not add a little fall colour to your front entranceway and interior living spaces?

Warm autumn hues are appearing everywhere at this time of year. Burnt oranges, yellows and browns are popping up in toss cushions, throws and other home accessories.

And, on cue, Pantone – widely recognized as an authority on colour which provides standards for the design industry and beyond – has once again come up with its fall colour choices for 2019.

The Pantone system is basically the standard language for colour that is used between the designer and manufacturer, then on to the retailer and then ultimately to the consumer. The company started this system years ago and its choices are now largely accepted among the design community.

This year Pantone’s official colours for autumn include Chili Pepper, Amparo Blue, Vibrant Yellow and Burnt Orange. You will see these colours in everything from sofas to pillows to drapes and other furnishings.

It’s easy to add these colours to your home’s decor for the fall. Inject these colours into your living room with throws and pillows. Look for ideas that incorporate these tones with floral displays and other items such as glass accessories. The cooler weather calls for cosy interiors so incorporate darker tones such as charcoal.

Style your front door with a wicker basket stuffed with white pumpkins and greenery. Add fall plantings to your pots with plants such as boxwood and redclaw shrubs.

Think warm tones and cosy colours to help transition your home into the fall. Pillar candles in deep orange will set that cozy scene on your coffee table. Accessorize with oversized coffee table books. Swap your summer toss pillows with ones in vibrant fall tones to create a seasonal, trendy colour palette.

And don’t forget your bedroom – replace your summer duvet covers with a warmer, more inviting colour scheme and co-ordinate this with matching toss cushions.

Embracing fall within your home is easy with just a few key accessories. It’s a nice way to say goodbye to summer and welcome in the fall season.
