WEST Vancouver's Brian Irwin was one of three B.C. students, and 20 from across Canada, recently awarded a Toyota Earth Day Scholarship.

Worth $5,000, the award is intended to reward and encourage environmental commitment and action among youth and is presented to graduating high school and CÉGEP students entering their first year of postsecondary education.

According to a written statement, Irwin, a 2012 graduate of Rockridge secondary, joined his school's environmental club and led various initiatives to achieve his vision of a greener, more sustainable community. With the club's executive team, he helped organize shoreline clean-ups and invasive ivy pulls and also enhanced the school's composting and recycling programs by increasing involvement and attaining 50 per cent waste reduction at the school. He has shared his school's waste reduction strategies with other groups, including West Vancouver secondary's Environmental Protection Network. Irwin also co-founded a school garden and helped secure the installation of 15 solar panels at Rockridge and inspired environmental action through a concert that showcased student musical talent.
