Firefighters in West Vancouver are calling it lucky that they were able to respond to a wildfire that could have been a lot worse.

At around 10 a.m. Wednesday, a person walking the Brother’s Creek Trail reported a fire in the area. West Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services responded quickly, and the person who reported the fire was able to direct them to where it was, said assistant chief Matt Furlot, who was on the scene.

“There was smoke and some flames, contained to three trees,” he said, adding that the underbrush was burning in an approximate 400-square-foot area.

WVFRS responded with the duty chief and two fire engines to the 300-block of Millstream Road, and with specialized wildland fire equipment secured to a nearby stream as a water source.

Furlot said that they had the fire under control in 45 minutes to an hour. He said the fire was very likely human-caused.

“It had tremendous potential to become larger,” Furlot said. “It’s very dangerous right now.”

Given the extremely dry conditions this fall, WVFRS is asking the public to be very diligent with their behaviour and to report any signs of wildfires.

“Honestly, we’re very lucky that we caught it early this morning,” Furlot said, thankful for the West Vancouver resident who called while walking the trail.

Any unsafe fire activities can be reported to 604-543-6700.
