Walkathon a success

The North Shore Special Olympics Walkathon raised more than $12,000 in support of local athletes and programs

Held May 26 at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver the event was attended by athletes, volunteers, parents and supporters of Special Olympics, according to a written statement. The organization is rapidly expanding and offers 24 programs for more than 170 athletes. Funds raised are spent locally and are used for uniform and equipment purchases, transportation and competition costs. Info: www. sobcnorthshore.ca.

The North Shore Dragon Busters won two first place finishes in the recent Women's False Creek Dragon Boat Regatta. Members are especially proud of the first place finish in the Breast Cancer Survivor Challenge Race.

North Vancouver's Stephanie Eggertson, of Collingwood School, was awarded one of 275 P.E.O. STAR scholarships for 2012-2013. She was chosen from 2,263 applicants and was one of 10 Canadian recipients.

Eggertson will be attending Cornell University in September.

The STAR scholarship, worth $2,500, was established four years ago. The award is based on academic achievement as well as leadership, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future success.

P.E.O. was founded in 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan College, Iowa and is an international philanthropic and educational organization promoting educational opportunities for woman through scholarships.

Simon Navarrete, a Grade 5 student at West Bay elementary School, won the Grade 5 category in the Canadian Children's Book Centre Book Week 2012 Writing Contest for Kids and Teens, part of TD Canadian Children's Book Week.

Navarrete received a $250 bookstore gift certificate for "Nanobots."

Last month, for the fourth year running, students at Gleneagles elementary shaved their heads in support of Vancouver Children's Hospital. They raised more than $6,500 and funds were directed towards children and families affected by cancer and blood disorders.

Team members were: Rohan Tupling, John Rowbotham, Colin MacNeily, Conner Ingram, Jett Nelson, Sam Parr, Andrew Hofmeyr, Vaughan Smith, Jaron Englebrecht and teacher Jim Cummings.
