This photo shows The Sugar Bowl confectionery and restaurant at the foot of Lonsdale in 1925.
The Sugar Bowl was a popular North Shore institution during the first half of the 20th Century when the workers from the Burrard Dry Dock kept the place busy.
As it was the only place open at 6 a.m. on the North Shore, it was also popular with the local police. The decline of Lower Lonsdale in the 1950s as a result of slowdowns at the dry dock and the end of ferry service in 1958 impacted small businesses like the Sugar Bowl.
Today, the area is active once again. It has been revitalized with new entertainment, shopping, restaurant, and cultural spaces – including our new museum space, MONOVA, opening later this year.
