MEC supports local bike project

THANKS to a grant from Mountain Equipment Co-op, the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition has received $14,000 to develop a pocket map of North Shore cycling routes.

THANKS to a grant from Mountain Equipment Co-op, the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition has received $14,000 to develop a pocket map of North Shore cycling routes.

According to a written statement, as part of the retailer's community grants program, 58 environmental and outdoor recreation projects from across the country were awarded a total of $604,389.

The community grants program offers funding for projects under the categories of environmental conservation, advocacy, education, and outdoor recreation. Formal applications for grants are reviewed by regional and national committees made up of MEC members and staff, who select the projects that receive support. The grants are announced twice each year and more than $1.3 million was given out in 2011.

Environmental and outdoor recreation groups can apply for the next round of community grants at mec.ca/sustainability. The deadline is March 10, 2012.

. . . A North Shore organization is among the semi-finalist projects from across the country announced for this year's Aviva Community Fund online contest.

The annual competition supports positive change in Canadian communities through a $1 million donation and Special Olympics B.C. North Shore is in the running.

According to their website, the organization endeavours to provide individuals who have an intellectual disability the opportunity to enhance their lives and celebrate personal achievement through positive sport experiences. Special Olympics B.C. North Shore provides sport training and competition for all levels of athlete - from developmental to high performance.

In this year's Aviva Community Fund online contest, more than 1,500 ideas have been submitted and more than 1.5 million votes have been cast for projects seeking to improve communities across the country. The top-30 semi-finalists will become finalists to share in the $1 million donation.
