The North Vancouver Football Club is hosting its inaugural Opening Day event tomorrow at Mahon Park, behind Fen Burdett stadium, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The free event will feature a number of all-day activities, such as soccer games and drills, the Vancouver Whitecaps community cruiser, guest speakers and plenty of community fun.

The third annual North Shore Seniors’ Health Expo is set to provide a wealth of knowledge and information to anyone interested in absorbing a number of fascinating guest speakers and exhibitors tomorrow at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A more complete schedule of events is available at the West Vancouver rec website, but expect to hear a number of speakers and researchers sharing information on cognitive, physical, social and financial well-being for older adults.

You might not have expected to find yourself celebrating the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence this Sunday, but now that you know you certainly should partake in the festivities. A special celebration of Polish independence, involving a family-friendly bounty of games, arts and crafts, traditional food, puppet theatre, dance presentations, live music and more will be on display Sept. 9 from 1 to 9 p.m. at Shipbuilders Square and The Pipe Shop in North Vancouver.

Come celebrate the conservation, preservation and sustainability of the environment – alongside some delicious fare – during the 39th annual Coho Festival this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. Attractions will include live music, an environmental stewardship zone, First Nations village, police and fire services tug-of-war competition, the ever popular salmon barbecue and more. Admission is free.

And finally, why not cap off the weekend with a presentation on how the oil industry undermines Canadian democracy? Author and former leader of the Alberta Liberal Party Kevin Taft will discuss his latest book, Oil’s Deep State, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the North Shore Unitarian Church in West Vancouver. Tickets: $15-$20.
