AdventureSmart, with support from Avalanche Canada and BC Parks, is promoting avalanche awareness and search and rescue prevention to snowshoers, hikers and backcountry enthusiasts Saturday, Jan. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the upper parking lot of Mt. Seymour Provincial Park. Participants will learn about personal preparedness, trip planning, training, and what essentials and equipment to bring. For youngsters harbouring a dream of being a farmer for a day, North Vancouver’s Maplewood Farm (405 Seymour River Place) has you covered. Children can get a behind the scenes look into the operation of the farm Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. during a one-hour session that includes activities such as egg collection and washing, animal grooming, setting up feed and exploring some of the farm’s “staff only” areas. Children must be pre-registered and pre-paid to participate. Prices include one adult and one child at $14.35 for members or $27.41 for non-members. Speaking of animals, the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre (3663 Park Rd.) and NatureKids BC are offering a free educational session for youth Sunday, Jan. 21 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Terrific Trackers, an event hosted by Soaring Eagle Nature School’s Jenna Rudolph, will teach children about how animals camouflage and protect themselves, and discover how to track animals through mud and snow. Fans of vocal performance, classical composition, and who are interested in exploring the often overlooked role of female composers in the history of Canadian music and art won’t want to miss a performance by Clarisse Tonigussi of the Canadian Women Composers Project this Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets: $15/$10. The one-hour recital, taking place at the St. Francis-in-the-Wood Anglican Church (4773 South Piccadilly Rd., West Vancouver), will feature compositions from female composers ranging from early-1900s pieces by Gena Branscombe and contemporary pieces by current musicians.
