Vancouver firefighters are tackling a two alarm fire at East Broadway and Fraser streets.

Firefighters are still battling a fire that broke out early Saturday (March 25) morning.

Around 5:30 a.m. Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) crews responded to a blaze at 719 East Broadway.

"Crews made entry but had to pull out due to extreme heat," says Brad Hesse, assistant chief of operations for VFRS.

The fire is now upgraded to a two alarm fire with about 45 members on scene, Hesse adds. One firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Heavy smoke engulfed the building which contains two businesses and a reportedly unoccupied residence above.

As of 9:50 a.m., fire crews are still on scene and the cause of the fire is unclear.

"The fire is not spreading at this time but it's deeply seated in the structure," Hesse tells V.I.A. "We still are fighting sparks from the exterior."

Broadway and Fraser streets are currently closed off in both directions.
