Authorities are investigating what they are calling an “external security breach” after a protest banner was placed high up on the front of the B.C. legislature overnight.
A unauthorized banner calling for a free Palestine and unspecified economic sanctions was prominently displayed on Thursday morning, visible to office workers and anyone else passing by the front of the building on their commute.
The Office of the Clerk, which runs non-partisan functions in the legislature, told the Times Colonist in a statement Thursday that the matter was being taken “very seriously” and that a full investigation is underway.
It did not respond to questions about when the banner was discovered and how it might have gotten there.
The banner — which was installed just above the giant Canada flag hanging over the legislature’s ceremonial entrance — was removed from the building’s exterior by mid-morning.
The building was not broken into overnight.
No person or group has claimed responsibility for the protest banner.
