Eric Emery of Surrey, B.C., won one million dollars playing Lotto 6/49 in the Christmas Day 2021 draw.

Talk about a Christmas bonus: Eric Emery's wife routinely asked him on Monday if he'd made the couple rich playing lotto, but after the Dec. 25, 2021 Lotto 6/49 draw, the Surrey resident could finally tell her he had.

“Every Monday, my wife asks me, ‘Did you make me a millionaire?’" Emery describes. "I knew she would ask me again when I got home and…I told her that I won a million dollars," the $1-million winner adds in a media release from BCLC.

Naturally, she didn't believe him at first.

“When she realized I was serious, she started crying," says Emery.

Emery bought his winning ticket at the 7-Eleven store on 200th Street in Langley and checked it later at a nearby Shoppers Drug Mart.

He, too, went through an initial moment of shock and confusion when he saw the results.

“My first thought was, ‘Is this an error?’ I saw the one and a bunch of zeros and thought maybe it was a binary-error code," adds Emery.

The plan is for Emery and his family to enjoy a celebratory meal out, and they'll make plans for a vacation once they feel it's safe to travel again.
