VCH investigating reported illness at Keats Camps

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is looking into the cause of an illness that affected some of the children attending Keats Camps on Keats Island last week.

Coast Reporter was forwarded a complaint from a parent of two children who were at the camp claiming several campers became “severely ill” with suspected food poisoning after dinner on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) confirmed its Environmental Health team is aware of the report and is investigating, but can’t verify any numbers or cause of any illnesses at this point.

Officials with Keats Camps told Coast Reporter there was an illness that went around during the Aug. 12 to 19 camp session, which was attended by children of various ages, and they are working with VCH on the investigation into what may have caused it.

The camp officials also said those who became ill all recovered within 24 hours, and the camp was “disinfected” immediately afterward.

VCH regularly inspects the kitchens at Keats Camps, as it does with any commercial food service establishment, and the last inspection July 30 found only a minor infraction involving paperwork.
