It's B.C. Day next Monday - a day off work during the traditionally toasty month of August - huzzah!
We've put together an engaging itinerary of local activities to help you make the most of it.
8 A.M.
Get your zen on with a drive out to Deep Cove for a morning of peaceful stand-up paddling. The fastest growing sport on the water, SUP offers an extra challenge to your balance and is an excellent core workout. There's nothing quite like feeling the sun on your face as you slip your paddle into the still waters of the Cove. Visit www.deepcovekayak.com for info, and be sure to call ahead: 604-929-2268.
10 A.M.
Once you've had your fill of the water, be sure to stop by Honey Doughnuts and Goodies for a namesake treat. Be warned: these are dense, heavy and none too light on the grease. One is more than enough; 4373 Gallant Ave/604-929-4988.
11 A.M.
Time to work that doughnut off. Head to the base of Grouse Mountain, strap on the water bottle and hit The Grind for some serious cardio. Or . . . take the Skyride to the top of the mountain and choose your activity. Take a chairlift ride to the peak, or watch the Birds in Motion demonstration. Don't miss the World Famous Lumberjack Show, visit the grizzlies, and if you're feeling daring, try the Air Grouse Mountain Ziplines. Afterward, grab a table on the highest patio overlooking Vancouver at Altitudes, and dig into a delicious lunch. Find out more at grousemountain.com.
2 P.M.
Cruise down to Lonsdale Quay Market to browse at more than 90 specialty shops and services, plus a close-up look at Vancouver's working port. Grab an ice cream and stroll the pier, or hit the shops upstairs for a great selection of specialty shops featuring local designers, kids shops and a play area.
Before you go, pick up snacks (local blueberries, raspberries and corn are all in season now!) for the evening ahead.
4 P.M.
The Harmony Arts Festival runs in West Vancouver from Aug. 3 - 12, and there is no shortage of things to do, see and listen to. Don't miss Vancouver's North Shore Tourism Art Market, along Argyle Avenue; or the Showcase Exhibition at the Ferry Building Gallery, featuring the work of 30 local artists.
7 P.M.
Get your blanket down early in front of the main stage at John Lawson Park (now would be a good time to dig into that picnic) for roots-rock band The Matinée. Their music has a homegrown flavour that is equal parts danceable and melancholic, and the show will make a sweet finish to your perfect B.C. Day on the North Shore.
