THE three North Shore fire departments are stressing the importance of being able to properly operate a portable fire extinguisher.
In a press release the departments recommend using a portable extinguisher only when the fire is in a small area such as a wastebasket.
For those who don't know how to operate a fire extinguisher there is one simple word to remember, "PASS."
P is for pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointed away from the operator. Then release the locking mechanism. A is for aim low and point the extinguisher at the base of the fire. S is for squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. S is for sweep the nozzle from side to side.
Be sure to install extinguishers close to exits and ensure that smoke detectors are working. Also have a fire escape plan. The departments recommend purchasing a multi-purpose extinguisher that can be used on all types of fires. They advise residents to ensure the extinguisher is large enough to put out a fire but light enough to properly handle.
