A spot of local

Usually, when you want to eat a meal made with seasonal ingredients that have been sourced locally you find an independent restaurant to eat at, or you make the meal yourself.

Usually, when you want to eat a meal made with seasonal ingredients that have been sourced locally you find an independent restaurant to eat at, or you make the meal yourself.

For larger restaurant companies, cost and supply can be insurmountable obstacles when it comes to buying local.

White Spot is one restaurant that works to support our province's producers as much as possible. According to a recent press release, almost 50 per cent of the chain's ingredients - including 675,000 pounds of tomatoes, almost 5 million pounds of Kennebec potatoes, and 73,000 pounds of blueberries - are from B.C.

In the summer, when produce and seafood are more readily available, the company uses even more of them in its Celebrate B.C. menu.

Until early September, the restaurant will offer special menu items, including Truffled Mushroom Flatbread, Candied Salmon Cavatappi, and Candied Salmon Spinach Salad, all using locally sourced ingredients.

This year, White Spot also kicks the celebration up a notch with a 100 per cent B.C. VQA wine list.
