A day at the farm

Summer-the growing season, is the perfect time to get out of the city and back to the farm... for a day anyway. From Richmond and Delta, east to Agassiz and Harrison Mills, the Lower Mainland is home to a host of people growing, raising and making good things for us to eat. BISSETT FARMS AND WESTHAM ISLAND ESTATE WINERY was Delta's very first winery. During berry season the farm has them all: blackberries, blueberries, boysenberries, currants, loganberries, marionberries, raspberries, strawberries and tayberries. Pick them yourself, or buy them by the basket. Farm is open June to August, 8 a.m.-6p.m.; winery is open year round, 10: 30 a.m.-5 p.m.

VISTA D'ORO FARMS & WINERY is located on 10 acres in South Langley overlooking Campbell Valley Park and Golden Ears Mountain Range. The Farmgate shop and tasting room features handcrafted wines and artisanal preserves, alongside orchard fruits grown on the farm. Enjoy farm fresh creations, baking, local artisanal cheeses, charcuterie and other delicious local products with a delicious picnic on the deck or under the walnut trees. Open February to December; Thursday - Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

ALDOR ACRES DAIRY CENTRE is a family-run dairy farm where you can find out how milk gets from the cow to your table. Take a hands-on guided tour that includes learning to milk a cow by hand (cross that off your bucket list), make butter and feed your new bovine buddies. Tours run daily at 4: 15 p.m., call ahead to book. Closed Aug. 21 - Sept. 9.

KRAUSE BERRY FARMS & ESTATE WINERY is a family favourite with farm animals and a fenced play area to entertain the children. You can pick (or they will) strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries, and the market offers a selection of specialty products made onsite in the Harvest Kitchen. Try farm-made fudge, berry shortcakes and 10-inch pies. Relax on the porch with a berry milkshake or farm fresh ice cream. Open seasonally through the year.

OCTAGON LAVENDER FARM AND STUDIO is a tranquil hillside five-acre garden in Maple Ridge. Enjoy the fragrance of lavender, discover new varieties, visit the drying shed, craft store and studio. Octagon also conducts craft workshops year round. Farm is open until Sept. 3, Daily 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

MAAN FARMS offers a full farm market experience with fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, veggies and sweet corn. From the first berries to the last of the pumpkins Maan Farms offers u-pick fields, a petting zoo, family fun centre, hay rides and corn, rope and sunflower mazes. Open all year, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

BIRCHWOOD DAIRY offers 50 flavours of gourmet ice cream and frozen yogurt, farm fresh milk, cream, European style yogurts, assorted cheeses including feta & cheddar curd. In July and August, open daily.

THE FARM HOUSE NATURAL CHEESES produces artisan cheeses and dairy products right on the family farm using the rich pure milk from their own cows and goats. The farm shop also offers local and regional food and gelati ice cream. Watch the cheesemaking process through the viewing windows. Open daily.
