HALIFAX — A helicopter fighting a wildfire in Nova Scotia crashed into a lake on Friday, and the pilot was rescued.

Firefighters quickly reached the aircraft in Annapolis County, N.L., and found the pilot conscious, said a news release Friday evening from the provincial Department of Natural Resources.

The release said the pilot, who was the sole person on board the aircraft, was talking to the other firefighters and taken for medical assessment.

"I'm relieved the pilot was rescued quickly and wish them a speedy recovery," said Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston in a tweet. "Thank you to everyone who responded so quickly to reach the aircraft and provide support."

The department said the crash occurred in shallow water just before 4:30 p.m. local time. The department said it would not release the pilot's name, out of respect for his privacy.

A spokesperson with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax said a Cormorant helicopter was dispatched to the scene to help out.

The province said Transport Canada has been informed about the incident.
