Sam Mulligan of North Vancouver’s Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club won silver in downhill at the 2018 FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Davos, Switzerland Wednesday.

The Vancouver native was just 0.02 seconds away from gold, finishing just behind Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt. Another racer from the host nation, Lars Roesti, finished third.

The event was a unique downhill race as it included two runs rather that the more traditional one run. Mulligan, 20, was excellent in both of his runs, finishing third the first time down and second on his final run.

“I’m really happy with today’s performance and the conditions were great,” Mulligan said in an Alpine Canada release. “It was a tight race today. Thank you to my teammates for pushing me!”

Mulligan just missed the podium at last year’s world juniors, finishing fourth in Super G.

Calgary’s Jeffrey Read finished in sixth place, while North Vancouver residents Cameron Alexander and Riley Seger were 17th and 20th, respectively. Both Alexander and Seger train with the Whistler Mountain Ski Club.
