Dear Editor:

In reading your article on the subject of the North Shore mayors' concerns with the rising cost of policing (Mayors Favour Joint Police Study, June 17, North Shore News), and in particular amalgamating the three policing areas, I couldn't help seeing the irony in West Vancouver mayor Michael Smith's comment: "If we had one command-andcontrol structure, one payroll department, one purchasing department, one dog squad, this sort of thing, it would provide more capability for the whole North Shore."

As a taxpayer, his comment - the irony of which seemed to be lost on him - would make more sense if the topic were amalgamating the three municipal governments into one for the entire North Shore.

It would certainly save money and eliminate redundancy.

But I wouldn't imagine any of the mayors to ever suggest such a move, as two out of the three mayors would be out of a job.
