Unfair coverage

NORTH Shore political pundit David Schreck handily won the booby prize this week for his Twitter comments on the appropriateness of Premier Christy Clark's cleavage.

Most people in social media circles wondered why Schreck felt the need to keep the world abreast of Clark's neckline in addition to her policies.

We have to agree.

As the premier of the province, there are many things for which Clark can legitimately be faulted. Clothing isn't one of them. It's not as though she busted out a bikini for question period.

The clothing that inspired Schreck's censure - a navy V-neck dress under a blazer - would not be out of place in most company boardrooms, assuming, of course, those boardrooms were in this century rather than the last one.

Clearly, the double standard when it comes to men and women in political life still exists. We can't recall the last time Adrian Dix, Stephen Harper or even Gordon Campbell was called out on what they were wearing.

Perhaps some folks still find it unsettling that the premier is a woman. Perhaps they'd like her to work harder to disguise that biological reality.

We doubt that Clark is rushing out to buy a burka, but the truth is the deck is still stacked against women in political life and comments like Schreck's aren't helpful. When it comes to the premier, the only frontal lobes we should be concerned with are those between her ears.

As one woman commentator put it, "Back to your caves, boys."
