Tie-down could bear-proof your garbage

Dear Editor: A month ago after a bear did $1,500 damage to my car while pushing it out of the way to get to the garbage can, I went to the district to get a bear-proof one. They said they were out of them and might get some in at the end of October.

Dear Editor:

A month ago after a bear did $1,500 damage to my car while pushing it out of the way to get to the garbage can, I went to the district to get a bear-proof one.

They said they were out of them and might get some in at the end of October. Great help.

I now use a 2,000-pound tie-down and it seems to have worked. Maybe a story about using a tie-down as an alternative might help a few others on the North Shore to help deter bears from their garbage.

I have had fences, gates and storage doors ripped off and really am tired of the damage. I was at the end of my rope so I used a tiedown.

There is information about how to use a ratchet strap on the North Shore Black Bear Society's website (www.northshorebears.com) under "bear proofing."
