Dear Editor:
I am 42 and have cycled the Keith Road area for more than 25 years. With the upcoming construction on Third Street, there is no way we can close a lane of traffic on Keith Road for cyclists. I travel this road at least three times per week and see a lot more cyclists on Third Street and the Low Level Road.
Having said this, why don't cyclists change their route in a minor way by travelling along Third Street which has a proven successful cycling lane, and connect along Queensbury instead? North Vancouver has already implemented a better path/ corridor for cyclists to travel along.
This argument for a bike lane on Keith Road is absurd, we cannot have more lanes shut down to traffic because of a small group of people who complain, even if they are lawyers.
We also have to pay attention to our fellow road users, some cyclists are better at travel on the road than others. The rule of thumb is slower moving vehicles must yield the right of way. Cyclists have to observe the rules of the road, many don't.
The Keith Road bike lane is a horrible idea and will only make this area more congested at a time when construction will make it impossible to navigate the roads in a timely fashion. Let's focus on more sustainable options and change routes in a minor fashion to feel safer on the roads. Remember cycling is inherently a dangerous thing to do on the public roads.
