Smart meters enable time-of-day billing

Dear Editor:

Great story in the May 16 North Shore News - WV Meter Fight Taken to New Level. The reason why BC Hydro is committed to its $1-billion Smart Meter program is to go to time-of-day pricing in its electricity rates. In other words, they will want to charge expensive rates during the morning and evening peak times. But who wants to cook meals at say 2 p.m. in the afternoon or to use their clothes dryer at 2 a.m. in the early morning?

The utility and government all deny this aspect of rate pricing. However, for our specific monthly bill, how can I save any more than what we are already paying at $39 per month, and we live in a 4,000 square foot house?

I believe that it is going to be the downfall of this current provincial government. The Gordon Campbell Liberals have taken the regulatory review of this matter from the BC Utilities Commission and given it cabinet approval.

I too have asked BC Hydro not to install a smart meter at my home, but have not gone to the extreme that Peter Ferlow did. Good for him!
