Sequoia deserved protection

Dear Editor:

I thought significant trees were to be protected.

For the last 400 years, long before it was the south side of the 1200-block of Marine Drive, across from SaveOnFoods, stood a sequoia. This majestic tree may well have been the largest tree in North Vancouver until it was cut down last week to fit another condo on the strip.

The development surely could have been designed to fit around and showcase this majestic giant, it was right on the front edge of the lot. But right now there is just the stump, more than two metres across, mostly covered with dirt to camouflage the murder.

This tree was only halfgrown. Many sequoias live 1,000 years. It should not have been cut down.
