Residence in retail makes sense

Dear Editor:

I write regarding your Feb. 24 story, City Relaxes Industrial Rules.

I think that not only should we allow retail to increase as a percentage of manufacturing space, but we should take note of what our great, great, great-grandparents did. That is, to have places where not only can you manufacture products and sell these products at the front of the shop, but also allow a person to live within or above the shop.

For any small business owner starting up, money is often in short supply. Having to pay to rent or own two or three different locations in order to build, sell and live puts a small business owner in the scramble for too many years. Not only is there unlimited air space to build above a place, but is saves on the cost of heating two or three places, plus the cost for insurance and security, water, phone etc.

Also, the commuting would be non-existent. Society as a whole would win by saving on the environment and traffic congestion.
