Dear Editor:
I was encouraged to read the article "A Big Idea Man Faces his People" (July 8, North Shore News). I am delighted to hear that our mayor has monthly meet-the-people sessions. I believe much can be gained with increased accessibility to our elected officials.
I learned about the value of accessibility when Jane Thornthwaite became MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour. She has been holding monthly "Join Jane" events since she was elected in 2009.
My work takes me to every major community event on the North Shore, and MLA Thornthwaite seems to show up at every one. Not only does she attend, but she takes the time to come and speak with our volunteers and acknowledge their contributions to the community.
Without discussions, how can our politicians effectively represent us?
