Majority on the North Shore favour four-day work week, poll finds

What would you do with an extra day off, not just on long weekends, but every week?
Cypress opens November 2021
A snowboarder enjoys opening day at Cypress Mountain, Nov. 19, 2021. If you had more days off, would you spend more time skiing or snowboarding the North Shore Mountains?

What would you do with an extra day off, not just on long weekends, but every week?

More time on the slopes? Running errands around town? A snooze in the backyard hammock?

It's an appealing thought experiment for a large swath of North Shore residents, according to a new poll, which finds a majority would support switching to a four-day work week.

Last month, the City of Merritt launched a four-day work week pilot program in the hope of attracting, recruiting and retaining municipal workers.

North Shore News polled 1,763 online readers and asked the question: Should we switch to a four-day work week?

The poll ran on our website from Sept. 27 to Oct. 11. Of the 1,763 votes, we can determine that 630 are from within the North Shore community. The full results are as follows:

Yes, work commitments are growing and life is too short. 56.03% local, 58.03% total
I like the idea but I'm worried about how it would impact the economy. 20.00% local, 17.75% total
No, five days a week is the right amount. 23.97% local, 24.22% total

Results are based on an online study of adult North Shore News readers who are located in North Vancouver and West Vancouver. The margin of error – which measures sample variability – is +/- 2.32%, 19 times out of 20.
