ABORTION. The word is guaranteed to bring out harsh, intolerant, close-minded, repressive, anti-science bigots.
I speak of course of the so-called pro-choice extremists. Especially the anti-science types. The science has left the anti-anti-abortionists - normally science-worshippers, except, as in the abortion matter, when the science doesn't fit their "progressive" ideology - in the dust.
The fetus is human life. Not the "blob of tissue" of the old discredited pro-abortion claim. Ultra-sound blasted that canard decades ago. Margaret Somerville, director of the McGill Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law, recently wrote in the Ottawa Citizen:
"There is quality evidence . . . suggesting the beginnings of pain perception in the fetus at 16 weeks gestation. . . . In response to this research, six American states have prohibited abortion after 20 weeks gestation, except to avoid a serious threat to the mother's life or health, while others have argued that physicians aborting such unborn children should be required to give them an anesthetic prior to their being killed."
Let me guess: If Canada's "abortion providers" administered anesthetic, they'd be implicitly admitting the fetuses are human life. Never! Saint Henry Morgentaler's disciples would then be unable to justify drowning fetuses in saline solutions, crushing their skulls before birth, and abortion's other stomachturning practices. Which is why it's not easy to find a good, reliable, stomach-unturned doctor to do the work.
Pro-choicers are already in ideological knots these days over "ethnic" selective abortion of girls.
Overwhelmingly, the media are eager accessories in snuffing out the slightest mention of pro-life activities, unless they're negative. Naturally, this confirms the perception that the issue is closed, cannot be revisited, and only a few fanatics won't accept the Canadian status quo: No restriction on abortion since the Brian DicksonBertha Wilson Supreme Court decision of 1988.
Now if only Mary Wagner were a noisy champion of expanded gay rights, or willing to go to jail for legalizing marijuana like motormouth martyr Marc Emery, or indeed the celeb convict Conrad Black - the media would be all over her story. They're not. You probably don't recognize the name.
This young woman goes into abortion waiting rooms and offers a rose and counselling. She's repeatedly jailed. You want close-minded, bigoted ranting? Here is Mr. Justice S. Ford Clements of the Ontario Court of Justice on March 21, ruling on an appeal of her mischief conviction and two counts of breach of probation:
"She can sit in jail, if that's the only way to protect people," ruled His Honour, calling her "cowardly" for "abusing other human beings. . . . Get a grip! You don't get it, do you? What's the rule of law? You're required to abide by it. . . ."
Uncourtly language, right? But then this astounding theological dogma from Clements, worthy of the Middle Ages (Modern Ages too): "You're wrong and your God's wrong."
A judge with direct access to the High Court! Where's the media - other than Tony Gosgnach, who reported this outburst for LifeSiteNews.com?
Silence is the media's favourite mode of Staliniststyle suppression. No wonder polls reveal public ignorance about our abortion law (none). But they couldn't dodge MP Stephen Woodworth's doomed private member's bill - and all praise for Aaron Wherry's professional reporting in Maclean's, and for "leftist" CBC TV, which gave Woodworth more air time than the offend-nobody private stations (ever watch CTV's newish morning news?).
Woodworth told the Commons that his Motion 312 "simply calls for a study of the evidence of when a child becomes a human being." The usual suspects, like old feminist warmare Hedy Fry, leaped forward. But so did Conservative government whip Gordon O'Connor, doing the boss's bidding, Stephen Harper being a pragmatic traitor to the social conservative constituency that empowered him.
Know this: Hard-line pro-lifers would kick me out of the club. My ideal is to make abortion not illegal, but unthinkable.
As best as a mere male can, I understand the dilemma of many. I've said before: The Tempter has crouched on my shoulder five times and whispered in its vulture voice: "You're too young, too unmarried, too poor, too old. . . ." My blood runs cold when I think of five great children who might not have been. It was the women who had mothers' faith; and faith, religious or secular, will get you through - without future regret.
