Dear Editor:
Re: West Vancouver mayor supports climate warning labels on gas pumps, Jan. 18 front-page story.
Contrasting this action is the declaration that (District of West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith) will be encouraging a No vote in the upcoming transit plebiscite.
I’m writing to complain about the hypocrisy inherent in those choices.
Stickers accomplish nothing. It isn’t even possible to measure the effectiveness of sticking a warning on a gas pump.
Encouraging a Yes vote in the upcoming plebiscite has the potential to tangibly address climate change by encouraging the expansion of bus and SkyTrain services across the Lower Mainland.
This action actually provides real, tangible resources to expand our public transportation services.
Is TransLink perfect? Not even close. But both voting No and sticking climate change warnings on anything accomplishes nothing. Voting Yes at least gives us a chance to better fund our public transit infrastructure.
I don’t live in West Vancouver, but I do live in Metro Vancouver, and am affected by the decisions of the mayor and council without any recourse but this letter.
