Dear Editor:
Re: North Vancouver MLA Calls for North Shore SkyTrain, Oct. 18 news story.
I’m amused that MLA Jane Thornthwaite’s proposed cross-harbour route just happens to connect her provincial riding directly to Vancouver and Burnaby. The more obvious albeit longer SkyTrain crossing would connect Lonsdale Quay to downtown Vancouver’s existing Waterfront station.
That said, there are many cheaper alternatives such as (likely forthcoming) mobility pricing. Another that Ms. Thornthwaite might consider promoting is a pedestrian gondola from Phibbs Exchange to the Westcoast Express tracks at the south end of the Ironworkers bridge.
Another even cheaper alternative is to do nothing. Many predict that car ownership and the number of cars on the road will soon decline as cheap self-driving electric taxis arrive and drastically reduce the need for both. Considering that, perhaps we shouldn’t be spending much money to improve our existing transportation infrastructure. The future is arriving faster than we think.
