Dear Editor:
Re: Dozens of Agencies Fight Mock Wildfire on Grouse Mountain
Living alongside Grouse Mountain, I received a FireSmart assessment. Unfortunately, the district fire and parks departments don’t agree on the fire risk to my home.
My FireSmart report highlighted greenbelt trees needing thinning/removal, however the parks department has no immediate plans to treat the stand. They suggested I could pay for the work on public land myself (reports, permits, arborists fees, etc) which is 10s of thousands of dollars.
Budget decisions are difficult but fire safety is a perfect example of a future problem that isn’t a concern until it suddenly becomes one, with disastrous results.
Public land is a public responsibility, and not just the responsibility of homeowners with the means to do the work.
