North Vancouver 14-year-old Jakob Tice, who has type 1 diabetes, shot 100 pucks a day for 16 straight days for a fundraiser celebrating the 100th anniversary of insulin.

Dear Editor:

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the incredible support we received from our amazing North Shore community following this article that appeared one month ago about my son, Jakob

We fundraise as a family every year for this event, but because it was the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, Jakob wanted to do something more this year, and he wanted it to be meaningful to him.  Hockey is his passion, so his fundraising idea was no surprise to his family and friends.  However, we were blown away by the community support.

First, a huge shout-out to the North Shore News team for writing this story and secondly, a heartfelt thank-you to every single person who read the article and donated to Jake’s team and/or shared his story with friends and family.  We do not know many of the people who donated, and this kind of community support touched us deeply.  Jakob had a big goal of $10,000, something we have never achieved in past years of fundraising for this event.  Thanks to everyone who supported him, we raised over $12,000!  Jake was so inspired by the donations that he received that some days, he shot 200 pucks, instead of 100. He truly felt supported by his entire community.

I may be biased, but I truly believe we live in one of the best communities in B.C., where kindness, generosity and neighbourly compassion are shared values.

Thank you,

Michelle Tice (Jake’s mom)
