Dear Editor:
Re: West Van to Consider Tree Cutting Rules, Feb. 21 front-page story.
Having lived on the North Shore since 1921, I am older than many of the “mature” trees being considered for cutting rules. To leave these shallow-rooted, top-heavy rapidly growing cedars and hemlocks in the midst of $2- million to $5-million homes is sheer folly. It would make a lot more sense to have a bylaw requiring a tree to be cut down when it reaches a specified height – say 30 metres.
Hurricane Frieda blew through here in October 1962, devastating large areas of Greater Vancouver. It was classified as a 50-year event. The mathematical possibilities are very interesting.
