Open letter to columnist Keith Baldrey:
Re: Site C Has Passed the Point of No Return, April 26 View from the Ledge.
How many billions of dollars will it take to convince the “naysayers” such as you and (consulting economist and adjunct professor in the public policy program at Simon Fraser University) Marvin Shaffer, the Liberal government and BC Hydro, that throwing more money at bad ideas will not make them good ideas? When you are on a path to destruction, it is best to stop.
Around the world, progressive governments and utilities are moving to conservation and renewables with low impacts, and lower cost than Site C.
BC Hydro’s own numbers show both are much less expensive options than Site C, and with three times the number of jobs.
Take a look at BC Hydro’s 2013 Resource Options Report Update Appendix 3, (RODAT summary sheets). Solar electricity is projected to be less than two cents/ kilowatt (US).
And the dreadful externalities?
Ignoring and destroying First Nations rights, thousands of hectares of prime farmland, CO2 and methane emissions from the reservoir.
(Christy) Clark’s “dash for destruction” of the Peace River Valley is just as stupid as it was 30-plus years ago.
We do not need the power, there is no financial benefit to the project and a huge burden.
The report on the Site C dam project (co-authored by the director of UBC’s program on water governance) outlines all this.
How on earth can you support this project?
A total waste of billions of dollars!
Yes, we will stop this disaster.
