An open letter to City of North Vancouver’s mayor and council:

Re: Our No. 1 Economic Issue: Transportation; Traffic Gridlock, Commute Times Straining Local Workforce, Major Employers Tell Business Forum, Dec. 1 front-page story.

If the City of North Vancouver is getting five per cent of the population onto bikes to commute, that is optimistic, as we are much hillier than the City of Vancouver. Maybe 50 per cent of the population on the North Shore commute for jobs and school.

If TransLink is being pushed, it has to be faster and reliable as to time frames for both the employees’ and employers’ sake.

We have gridlock on main bus routes due to the narrowing of vehicular traffic to one lane on many streets, such as the eastbound (uphill) part of Keith Road and 15th Street.

Why are we spending millions of dollars for bike lanes used mainly for recreation?

We have to ensure proper access for commuters to keep the jobs and economy going.

Eliminate street parking and bike lanes on all bus routes. Then dedicate the curb lanes to transit vehicles.

The mayor’s administrative assistant responds:

“Although increasing infrastructure for vehicles may offer some short-term relief, the research and experience in other cities indicates that we cannot build our way out of congestion. The Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation has developed a comprehensive 10-year Vision for urgently needed transportation investments, which includes important improvements for public transit and active transportation – such as cycling routes – that will help relieve congestion on roads and bridges.
