Letter: Public deserves answers over loss of subsidized suites at North Shore seniors home

Is this a financial issue or solely a change in mandate by a private company?

Dear Editor:

Re: Tenants worried and confused over loss of subsidized suites at North Vancouver seniors home

As a senior and taxpayer living on the North Shore, I am writing to express my concerns regarding the decision made by Vancouver Coastal Health, that in two years they will withdraw their support of subsidized housing at Chartwell Churchill House for eligible seniors needing care.

Currently, there is a waitlist for the quoted 91 subsidized assisted living spaces on the North Shore. The number of seniors on the wait list is not public information. However, the fact that a private facility has been used is an indication that the number of seniors needing subsidized care is more that the spaces available.

In two years, will the required spaces magically appear or is it anticipated that the number of seniors requiring this care will decrease? Neither is realistic.

I think the public deserves more information. Why was an agreement unable to be reached between VCH and Chartwell?

Is this a financial issue or solely a change in mandate by a private company? If it is a financial issue, who at VCH is responsible for the decision?

Why was the solution of “grandfathering” those 31 involved residents not considered? What is VCH’s plan to support and assist the affected seniors?

I am distressed that vulnerable seniors towards the end of their lives have been placed in a tenuous situation over which they have no control, resulting in more uncertainties for their future. If they are fortunate to have family members as advocates, it is an added burden and worry for them.

More transparency to the broader North Shore community from VCH needs to be forthcoming. The decision affects not only the current 31 residents at Chartwell Churchill House, but also potentially all North Shore seniors and their families.

I would appreciate answers to the questions I have raised.
