Dear Editor:
Born and raised on the North Shore and having been a younger resident of Lower Lonsdale for the past 10 years, it’s been incredible watching and experiencing the rapid evolution of this neighbourhood first-hand.
Don’t get me wrong; I believe there is a need for the North Vancouver museum and its vast history; I just don’t think it should be located in the Pipe Shop.
Most of the feedback on social media and articles I’ve read arguing for a museum appears to have come from an older generation, so as such, as a member of the younger generation,
I’d like to argue why the Pipe Shop should remain a multi-use facility.
Although sometimes empty during slow seasons, I’ve seen and attended many different events taking place there: summer night market, winter market, Halloween parties, random Wednesday night parties and weddings alike.
I think having a unique space that the public can take advantage of in different ways helps keep the area fresh and vibrant.
It’s one of the most incredible spots around and having a multi-use building that preserves the history of the Shipyards at the bottom of the mountains, on the ocean, with a breathtaking view of the city is like none other.
I feel our younger generation wants to see the space used by different groups to celebrate and continue to bring the community together as happens with the various markets throughout the year.
When people and groups get creative with a blank canvas such as the Pipe Shop, the opportunities are endless. The bottom line doesn’t hurt the city either.
