Dear Editor:
I have serious concerns about the way driving has evolved on the North Shore.
Some drivers seem to have the inability to understand that entering an oncoming lane from a side street means that they have to wait for traffic to pass by them before entering the space, instead expecting other drivers, who have the right of way, to stop or slow down to accommodate them.
Other drivers, who own large SUVs, seem to feel, when turning around a corner, that it is perfectly acceptable to take over more than one lane to do so, even though it means mean cutting off other drivers (Keith Road heading towards Park & Tilford is especially bad when oncoming traffic has the green arrow).
Merging is another issue. Some drivers won’t let people merge where merging is appropriate. Others get angry when the car in front of them allows another car to merge in front of it.
Some drivers have no concept of space when it comes to changing lanes on the freeway and on bridges. It seems that if the turn signal is on then a space will magically appear, so entry of their vehicles is not their problem (it is just everyone else’s).
Maybe I am one of a few unfortunate drivers who encounters these things. All I know is that when my husband drives from Richmond to the North Shore, after work, the last eight minutes of his commute is hell. Personally, I don’t think that North Shore drivers are any better or worse with respect to competence – I think some drivers suffer from a severe case of entitlement.
