LETTER: Neighbours want 'real consultation'

Dear Editor:

G3 and the Port Metro Vancouver need to know that the majority of people in North Vancouver have no idea this terminal has been in the planning process for months and are saying a resounding no to its approval.

There is a petition on change.org (change.org/p/stop-g3-in-north-vancouver-stop-g3-in-north-vancouver) and a Stop G3 in North Vancouver page on Facebook.

My neighbours are upset and frustrated that they are learning of this grain terminal only now and have just days to express their outrage and opposition. People are extremely concerned about the enormous size of this terminal, the increased traffic it will bring, noise and dust pollution and the environmental consequences of such a facility. People are asking why a project this size is not better suited for Roberts Bank, away from a residential area.

G3 has placed a deadline of Feb. 1 for public feedback. I am asking G3 and the port to provide a real opportunity for public consultation in the form of a town hall, sponsored by them, so people can speak to the issues.

Thirty days is not a realistic amount of time for community involvement. G3 and the port have an obligation to engage in public consultation. Real consultation means interchange and discourse. So far, both of these organizations have offered and provided little of both.
