Dear Editor:

Re: Adding Housing Will Not Remove Traffic Jams, Nov. 24 The North Side opinion column by Paul Sullivan.

How do you solve the traffic problem? The solutions from our local MLAs (as quoted in Mr. Sullivan’s column):

Bowinn Ma, the freshly minted MLA for North Vancouver-Lonsdale: “The problem is housing affordability.” (This definitely is a solution.)

Jane Thornthwaite, who has been an MLA a lot longer than Bowinn Ma: “We need density.” (OK, that doubled me over as a solution – more people, less traffic.)

Ralph Sultan, the veteran MLA: “Power up development.” (This comes from a veteran who has been the MLA for the past 17 years, so he knows how to solve the traffic jams – just look at our streets.)

I would like to add one more item. I wrote about it to our three North Shore mayors; none bothered to reply. Car-sharing companies have mushroomed all over our streets. None of my neighbours sold their cars and switched to the car-sharing option. So, who is using them? I spoke to some of my neighbours who told me that they are being mainly used by nanny suite renters who used to take the bus. Car2go is cheaper and more flexible. So, in one swift move, we removed riders from our public transit and added more cars on the streets.

More traffic? You bet. Brilliant.
