Dear Editor:
Re: First Past the Post Has its Faults But Is Better than the Alternatives, Sept. 16 Mailbox.
While I agree with (letter-writer) Jack Chivo that all systems of electing our representatives have faults the people should be offered the various alternatives including first past the post in a national referendum – preceded by an education process. This is a big country in geographic terms so what works for other countries like Ireland or New Zealand that have proportional representation may not work for us.
There is too much clamouring for change to simply ignore it, but let’s not rush the process. And, our prime minister has already judged what is good for us – proportional representation.
We have three or four years to get it reasonably close to the will of the majority. That may well be FPTP.
