Dear Editor:
As I read the front-page story of the May 25 North Shore News, Squamish Pipeline Challenge Rejected, my heart sank.
It sank, because I fear for our beautiful coastline. The reason is “human error,” the most unpredictable element.
We would have almost zero accidents in the world, if it were not for human error. Ask North Shore Rescue.
How many of us can look back on our lives without realizing a mistake we once made that could have or did cost us dearly?
It will only take a huge tanker, or a barge, running aground on a sand bar, or bumping into the Second Narrows Bridge, or straying too close to the rocks.
Because with the greatly increased volume of tanker traffic using the inlet, it will increase the chance of accidents, just as the accidents have increased on the Upper Levels stretch of Highway 1 due to the increased volume of traffic.
British Columbia’s waters will be mostly at risk, not so much because of a leaky pipe, but because of “human error.”
